About us

Westgate Chambers was established in 1987 and now consists of more than 40 barristers based in Lewes and operate throughout the South East and beyond. Chambers is proud of its reputation for excellence and amenability. As a pupil you will be welcomed into the team and invited to join members at regular Chambers and circuit events.

Structure

The pupillage is divided in to 3 periods of 4 months supervision. The work undertaken will be mainly in criminal and family law. We actively encourage periods of work experience during your First Six with outside agencies such as the Crown Prosecution Service and local authorities.

You will benefit from a rigorous training programme that can be tailored to pupils’ areas of interest. In your first six you will participate in regular workshops which will focus on common applications and drafting. In your second six you will undertake assessments in Crime, Family and Civil.

Work in your Second Six

Chambers are a very busy common law set. You will have the opportunity to practice in all areas of Chamber’s work and can expect to appear frequently in the Magistrates prosecuting, defending and representing clients in the family courts. You will also have opportunity to work in the Crown Court and will undertake civil actions in the County Court.

Funding

Your Pupillage award will be circa £16,601. Chambers awards a grant of circa £8,301 plus circa £8,300 guaranteed earnings per annum. You will receive this in monthly instalments.
