Pupillages

About us

Westgate Chambers was established in 1987 and now consists of more than 40 barristers. We are based in Brighton and operate throughout the South East and beyond. Chambers is proud of its reputation for excellence and amenability. As a pupil you will be welcomed into the team and invited to join members at regular Chambers and circuit events.

Structure

The pupillage is divided into 3 periods of 4 months supervision. We actively encourage periods of work experience during your first six with outside agencies such as the Crown Prosecution Service probation service, housing agencies, and local authorities.

You will benefit from a rigorous training programme that can be tailored to pupils’ areas of interest. In your first six you will participate in regular workshops which will focus on common applications and drafting.

In your second six you will be required to undertake a number of assessments relevant to Chambers’ specialist practice areas.

In addition to the work undertaken within your focused pupillage specialism (crime or family), you will have the opportunity to practice in all areas of Chambers’ work. You can expect to appear frequently in the Magistrates’, County and Crown Courts. This work can vary between
prosecuting, defending, as well as representing parents and children in family proceedings.

Chambers reserves the right to amend the structure of pupillage if required.

Funding

Your Pupillage award will be in accordance with the BSB required minimum for out of London sets. Chambers awards a grant of half this required amount and guaranteed earnings for the remaining half of this required minimum per annum. You will receive this in monthly instalments.
